Stylish, Versatile : Reed Diffusers add an Elegant Touch to your Home.

Reed diffusers are rising in popularity as an effective alternative way to fragrance your home.

These offer a subtle aroma and are a popular home accessory because it allows the scent to continuously diffuse into the air thereby fragrancing on an ongoing basis.

Diffusers last well and there is no danger of an open flame.    This makes them convenient and an ideal way to fragrance using your favourite scents.   They smell wonderful, look beautiful, and add an elegance to your decor.

Diffusers come in many shapes and sizes but no matter what there are 3 basic components to all diffusers.

1.      The Jar / Vessel that will hold the fragrance oil.  This is best in glass.

2.      The reeds which are what actually diffuse the fragrance oil

3.      The Fragrance/Essential oil that you choose to use to scent your environment.

The choice of fragrances are varied and you can even blend a bespoke fragrance especially to your requirements. (See below)   Mixing fragrance oils with their great smells and essential oils which not only smell wonderful but also offer the added natural holistic healing properties is a wonderful opportunity to experiment with aromatherapy.     Your fragrance mixes make wonderful gifts for someone that has a diffuser.

The sticks are normally natural rattan reeds. One end gets submerged and the other exposed end diffuses the smell.    It’s a very simple and effective process.  The reeds have small pores in them which allow the fragrance oil to be absorbed and travel up the sticks.   Once the oil reaches the reed tops which are outside the bottle this liquid evaporates into the air creating the subtle scent.

Reed diffusers are quick and convenient to use — with minimal maintenance. You can fill up a room with your favourite fragrance in just minutes.

Using Your Reed Diffuser

  • The best way to use a new reed diffuser:   Place your diffuser on a sheet or two of paper towels underneath the glass container,  in case of spills or fill your diffuser on a tray or over a sink.   Avoid doing this over wood or delicate surfaces because the oil may leave stains.
  • Pour the oil into the diffuser,  until it is approximately ½ to ¾ full. Don’t fill it all the way to the top, or it might overflow when you add the reeds.
  • Place your reeds into the diffuser so that the bottom of the sticks are submerged in the fragrance oil. The number of reeds you add determines how light or strong the scent is (we recommend starting with 6 to 8 reeds but this does depend on the size of your container).
  • Give your reeds a few minutes to absorb the oil, then carefully flip them over so that the dry end of the sticks are in the bottle and the saturated ends are in the air.
  •  Spread your reeds out in a fan shape inside the diffuser, as much as possible to let air circulate between them. Allow up to 24 hours for the fragrance to fully diffuse
  •  Flip the reeds periodically (around once a week) to keep the scent strong. You can flip more often but this will mean that you will use more diffuser oil.

A reed diffuser will typically last between 1 to 6 months, depending on the amount of aroma oil in the vessel.

When you want a burst of fragrance, flip the reed sticks. Do this carefully one by one to avoid letting the fragrance oil drip out.

If you feel that the scent is too light, you can also add more reeds to your diffuser

Placing Your Reed Diffuser

It’s important to consider the size of the room and where to place your diffuser.   Popular places to use reed diffusers include:

  • Bathrooms
  • Entrances
  • Kitchens
  • Bedrooms
  • Offices

For smaller rooms and areas like bathrooms and entrance ways, a small reed diffuser with 6 to 8 reeds is usually sufficient to provide a nice, subtle fragrance. For more spacious areas, you may need additional reed sticks and a larger diffuser to fill up the entire space or multiple diffusers to get the desired effect.

Choose an area with good air circulation but not next to air conditioners or windows.  Place the diffuser somewhere that people tend to walk by, so that they get a good whiff of fragrance.

It is best to place your reed diffuser in a cool, shady location. Keeping the bottle at a lower temperature and out of direct sunlight will help it last longer as the oil is volatile and will evaporate faster if not protected.

How Often Should You Flip the Reeds ?

Flipping your reed sticks every so often provides a fresh burst of fragrance and helps prevent the reeds from getting clogged. Doing this once a week is best.

Just take the reeds out and put the dry end into the vessel. Do this over a sink or trash can to avoid dripping oil onto your table or furniture.

Replacing the Reeds

Good quality rattan reeds can last up to six months.  After the first month you might notice the scent starting to fade. That’s because dust and other impurities can start to clog up the reed over time, and this can hinder the fragrance oil from diffusing properly.

For best results, change your diffuser reeds every 3 to 4 months.

Some Essential Oil Diffuser Blend Ideas

  • Add these essential oils to our All Kinds of Everything Diffuser Base.    You can also make your own blends. (See below)   While these suggestions are made with Essential Oils you can also use Fragrance oils or even mix and match - Use Fragrance oils and Essential Oils to make your very own blend.   A very special gift because you can formulate the fragrance to suit the person you are giving this to.

  •  There are many DIY Differ Oil Base Recipes online.  However these are not very effective.  The fragrance throw will not good and the oil can also go rancid,  as the oils suggested are not ideal for a diffuser base.    It is better to use a properly formulated Diffuser Base which makes use of our  proprietary formulation and includes proper alcohol at a strength that works best.  This does not make it unnatural.  The base has been formulated for us in keeping with as natural as possible.  Nothing less than 90%.   To the Diffuser Base you simply add our own concoction of Essential oils, Fragrance oils or a Mix of the two.

          Essential Oil Blends:

Blending your own Bespoke Diffuser Fragrance Blend

To start think about the smells you want to include.    Should the smell be Fruity and Fresh,  Floral,
Spicy  or Medicinal.   We are going to work with fragrance oils here but the same principle applies to
  essential oils.

e.g.    Fruity and Floral with a touch of Spice.
            Rose Geranium
            Apple
            Mint

 To start a blend :
  • Using a small cellophane bag and 10 Cotton Swabs ( Eco please)
  • Dip the swabs into the fragrance oil.   Each one dipped for the same amount of time ( in and out)
  • This will give an equal part mix.  1 part  Apple 1 part  Rose Geranium 1 part Mint.
  • Place the swabs into the bag.  Seal.   Allow to mingle and mature of 2 minutes.
  •  Smell.  Your nose must be happy.
  • Add more of any fragrance if you want to change the smell by adding another swab of the the fragrance you think needs enhancing.
  • Again let this mingle and mature.
  • Smell and keep adding until you are happy.

You might be happy with a simple blend   1 part of each fragrance .  We suggest that you stick a label onto the bag and write on the label the fragrances you have used.  Then the number of swabs.  1 part on each to start and +1 each time you add another swab.  The +1 should go next to the added fragrance.

Let us assume that we ended with a blend of

2 Parts Rose Geranium

1 Part  Mint

1 Part  Apple.

This makes our blend a 4 part blend   2 + 1 + 1  =  4.

Now for the real deal. :

Assuming you will make 100 mls of Fragrance Blend.

2 Parts of 100 mls will be Rose Geranium   =   50 mls

1 Part of 100 mls will be Mint                      =   25 mls

1 Part of 100 mls will be Apple                     =  25 mls

Next you need to add your fragrance blend to the Diffuser base.    We suggest using our oils that you add between 10% to 25% Fragrance blend to your diffuser base.   This can vary depending on fragrance oils being used.    Its best to test until you are happy with the fragrance that is being diffused.

Mixing your Fragrance Blend into the Diffuser Base

Lets make 250 mls  of the Diffuser base mixed with the Fragrance blend you have just created.

We suggest between a 10% and 25 % ratio of Fragrance blend to Diffuser Base.   This varies because you need to decide how strong you want to make this and sometimes the fragrances used will vary the amount to be added.

Place 250 mls Diffuser base into the container.  You can use plastic of good strong quality but glass is always better.  You should add  25 mls of the fragrance blend, if going for a 10% mix to the container that has the diffuser base in it.    If you want a stronger smell add 60 mls of the fragrance blend to the diffuser base bottle.    Mix well by shaking and then let it all settle.   The liquid should be clear.   If after 1 hour this is milky then the amount of Fragrance blend is too much and it means that the fragrance cannot mix and be absorbed into the diffuser base.    Add more Diffuser base a little at a time.

Fragrances can be replaced using the same formula for essential oils or you can mix and match.

Essential oils might be more inclined not to mix in well and you will notice small oily drops floating on the diffuser base.  Again just add a little at a time, diffuser blend.   This is more the exception that the rule and using the All Kinds Diffuser base should provide you will a good result if you follow the ratio's suggested.

Place your diffusers where you want them and enjoy.   Your environment will smell good and bad odour free.

 Happy Blending and Diffusing.
